As gas prices skyrocket, many people are doing something healthy for the planet and for their hearts: they are getting back on their bicycles. However, since many people have not ridden since childhood, it is important to remember that bicycle accidents can happen to even the strongest of riders, and that safety comes with prevention.
There are several ways to avoid serious bike accidents, which people in dense cities are particularly at high risk of. One of the most obvious ways to protect oneself is to wear a helmet. Okay, so you didn’t like wearing one as a kid and now it’s even worse that you have to walk into work with a flattened head of hair. However, the head trauma that can occur as the result of a bicycle accident is reason enough to proudly sport even the ugliest of helmets. Another way to avoid collisions with other bikers, pedestrians and cars is to get a headlight and reflectors. You may be able to see a car coming at you in the darkness, but as a biker you are much smaller, and harder to see. On that note, it is also important not to ride in the blind spot of a car, particularly when stopped at an intersection where you intend to go straight, and the car beside you wants to turn right. Finally, do not ride on sidewalks. It makes you invisible to motorists, and you can hurt a pedestrian as well.
Our planet could use a rest from exhaust fumes from cars, and bicycling is a healthy way for America to lose some weight, get more energy and learn to appreciate the environment again. In order to make the return to bicycles more effective and safe, avoid bicycle accidents by being aware and cautious while riding.
