An interesting editorial in the NY Times on September 9, 2006 discusses a study done about doctors who have made medical errors, or committed medical malpractice, and whether the doctors inform their patients.
"It's probably no surprise that doctors are less likely to admit a serious mistake if they think they can get away with it than if they think the patient will find out. But now we have confirmation from a survey of some 2,600 doctors in the United States and Canada concerning what they would tell patients about serious medical errors in four hypothetical cases. "
