Kaiser Permanente has agreed to a settlement for dumping homeless patients. The
patient dumping by Kaiser resulted in a settlement and changes in Kaiser policies.
Caroly Ann Reyes was a 63-year-old patient who was discharged from Kaiser's Bellflower hospital last March. Video from a local rescue mission shows Ms. Reyes in a hospital gown and slippers being dropped off by a taxi and then wandering aimlessly along the street. After several minutes, officials from the rescue mission escorted her inside.
Legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California, Mark Rosenbaum, said until now the problem has received little attention from law enforcement in cities and the Kaiser settlement was a national model for a problem.
