A new gene based test to determine whether
breast cancer has spread to the nearby lymph nodes has just been approved by the FDA.
Testing of the underarm lymph nodes up to now has been done by removing what is known as the sentinel node for examination by a pathologist.
The approval was based on a clinical trial involving over 400 patients and accurately predicted spread of breast cancer in almost 88% of the time in women with spread outside the breast. Patients without spread outside the breast were identified 94% of the time.
The test also gave fewer false negative results but slightly more false positive results.
